Tank Museum – worth a visit

Dtank museumo you like history? Would you like to find out more about what difference technology has made to warfare? Well, you can’t get much closer than you can with the Tank Museum. It does a fantastic job of bringing tanks and tank crews back to life; thanks to the support of the world’s most awe inspiring collection of tanks this is made possible. If you have children, then the school holidays are definitely the right time to visit as more is brought to the day with their action packed live displays.

There is a story to be told when it comes to armoured warfare and the exhibitions at Tank Museum carry this out perfectly; the history spans over 100 years. There are six large halls to be explored where you will come face to face  with the very vehicles that were in amongst the action of all the major wars of the 20th century.
Without spoiling anything, the exhibitions range from ‘The Tank Story’, ‘The Trench Experience’ and the ‘Battlegroup Afghanistan’. All of these bring war experiences to life and, as already mentioned, during the school holidays the experience gets even better with life-like explosions, thundering engines and fantastic commentary.

german tiger tank museumDid you know – the worlds first ever tank was the feared German Tiger Tank. Both the German Tiger Tank and the modern Challenger 2 are amongst the unique collection of 200 vehicles.

So, as you may or may not know, the tank was a British invention, and it changed warfare forever once it was introduced to World War 1. Bovington has been the home of the tank ever since. From the Somme to Tiananmen Square or D-Day to Desert Storm the tank, they have all played a part in shaping history.

“The Tank Story”
This is a key element of the project and here is where you are told the story of the tank from its World War 1 origin to the future. This new 50,000 sq ft multimedia exhibition puts the development of the tank in context with global events, whilst the experiences of former tank crews are presented in their own words.

“The Trench Experience”
This will allow you to walk in the footsteps of a World War 1 soldier from the recruiting office to the front line and in the Discovery Centre; you will find out how different tanks are used in different ways and learn what its like to be a tank crewman.

“Battlegroup Afghanistan – The Armoured Soldiers Story”
The men of the Royal Armoured Corps have been engaged in some of the fiercest fighting since World War 2. This is where they will tell their story, but be warned, it is done so with uncompromising, blunt honesty. You will explore a re-created Forward Operating Base and hear first hand accounts from the veterans which will then leave you time to see a range of vehicles used in Afghanistan today.

There are a number of special events that are hosted throughout the year which include lectures, military band performances, experience days, the annual Tankfest, a Christmas Fayre and ‘behind the scenes’ tours. For more information on these please see www.tankmuseum.org or follow them on Facebook www.facebook.com/tankmuseum

What do you think? Is that something you are likely to do whilst you stay with us? We recommend this as it is a great day out for all ages and interests.
