Access Statement



The Castleton is a 4 star guest house situated approximately half a mile on a level walk from Swanage Town centre and located approximately 100m from the beach. The town centre offers a variety of shops, restaurants and bars. Within 200 metres of the Castleton there are 4 establishments serving food and alcoholic beverages. A general store & newsagent is located within 400 metres.  
The Castleton is a Victorian building dating from circa 1850. Nine of its ten bedrooms are on the 1st and 2nd floor, approached by a wide carpeted stairway with secure handrail. The tenth bedroom is on the ground floor just inside the front door. All floors are carpeted with the exception of the conservatory in the dining room, which has a wooden floor. The dining room, lounge and tenth bedroom are all on a level. The bedroom is brightly lit, with 3 double wall lamps and a central hanging lamp plus bedside lamp. The bathroom affords level access and has a shower with a small step (<10cm) to gain access. Whilst this room has no specific disability aids it would be suitable for persons of limited mobility.


Reservations for the Castleton may be made by telephone, mail and e- mail. Deposits to secure reservations can be taken via cheque or credit and debit cards and can be completed by phone. All confirmed reservations receive written confirmation of the booking, receipt for the deposit and confirmation of the dates reserved.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

Check-in time is between 4.00pm – 6.00pm. When you arrive you will be given a bedroom and front door key to The Castleton to allow 24 hour access for the duration of your stay.
The Castleton has 4 private parking spaces and the 15 metres from the car park to the front door is paved and on the level. A ramp is available for the one small step (<15cm) into the house. Free, unrestricted on-street parking is available in nearby Burlington, Victoria and De Moulham Road (less than 200m from the Castleton). In addition Pay & Display parking facilities are available at the North Beach Car Park located within 200m.
Swanage has excellent Public transport links with buses running from Wareham and Bournemouth railway stations and from Poole bus station (Wilts & Dorset  Bus service: 01202 673555 – ), the nearest bus stop to The Castleton is less than 20m. Private hire taxis are also available.

Main Entrance & Reception>

Access to The Castleton reception, on the ground floor, is through a standard 1.5m front door, over a 5 inch stone step.  This offers access to a Guest Lounge with comfortable seating, reception area and the dining room where further seating is available. The approach and entrance areas are well lit with floodlighting and a lamp positioned above the front door. We are happy to assist with guest’s luggage on check in and check out.

Public Areas - WC

There are 2 WC’s for Guest Use only located on the first floor landing, accessed by 16 stairs which are 80cm wide, carpeted with a secure handrail.

Dining Room, & Lounge

The dining room is situated on the ground floor, with access from reception through a 0.8m door. Dining room furniture is movable and all tables have central support columns.  Breakfast is included in the cost of accommodation with the full selection described on a written menu; daily specials are also available and the menu is available in large print or read out by a member of staff. With notice we are able to accommodate most special dietary requirements.
The Guest lounge offers views over Swanage Bay and seating is provided by 2, 3 seater sofas plus window seating for up to 4. Digital TV plus DVD player is available for Guest use and a large selection of DVD films is available for Guest Use. In addition a broad selection of books and board games is available.


There are 16 stairs to the 1st landing plus 4 more to the first floor where 4 bedrooms are situated and a further 13 steps up to a half landing and 5 more to the 2nd floor where another 4 bedrooms are located.
Each bedroom or Suite is equipped with television and DVD player, superior rooms are equipped with flat screen digital TV & DVD controlled by remote control and a digital clock-radio is also provided. A library of DVDs is available for guests.
Each room has tea, coffee & hot chocolate making facilities, bottled water and biscuits etc. A small refrigerator is located in most rooms. All bedrooms have smoke detectors.  The house is centrally heated and the radiators are individually controlled from each bedroom. Fans are available on request.


All bedrooms have en suite bathrooms, shower rooms or both. Bathroom fittings are standard and of good quality however not specifically adapted for guests with restricted mobility or with impaired sight.

Secure overnight storage of wheelchairs is available.
